(Opening statement of the Political Declaration adopted by the United Nations General Assembly Special Session on Drugs, 1998)
The Liberation Social and Charitable Society was founded in 2008, in response to the alarming rise of addiction among the youth in Kerala. However, our journey began much earlier — in 1998 — with grassroots efforts to create awareness about chemical dependency and to provide rehabilitation for recovering alcoholics.
Our first initiative was “Mukthi Bhavan,” a home for individuals struggling with drug and alcohol addiction. The success of this initiative led to the formation of several self-help groups in and around Thodupuzha.
Following the establishment of the Liberation Society, divine inspiration guided us to begin a full-fledged de-addiction and rehabilitation centre — “Prathyasha Bhavan.” This centre was constructed as a psycho-social rehabilitation facility within the premises of “Divyarakshalayam,” a home for the mentally challenged.
At Prathyasha Bhavan, a new light of hope has dawned in the lives of countless individuals battling alcoholism and chemical dependency. Though addiction is considered a medically incurable disease, we have witnessed many lives and families being healed — physically, mentally, and spiritually. Our healing program includes detoxification, de-addiction, and rehabilitation spread over 21 days.
While there are no mandatory aftercare requirements, many of our patients voluntarily continue follow-up sessions and maintain sobriety “one day at a time.” Prathyasha Bhavan remains a home of healing for individuals and families affected by chemical dependency. Although our facilities do not include psychiatric care, we also provide limited support for those struggling with drug addiction.
To enhance awareness about alcoholism and substance abuse within Indian communities.
The mission of The Liberation Social and Charitable Society is to improve the quality of life for men, women, youth, and children by offering consistent, accessible, and compassionate services. We work collaboratively with communities to identify, address, and prevent problems arising from alcohol and chemical abuse, while promoting personal and social enrichment for all.

The essential principle that governs human existence — deeply woven into every individual’s life — is the pursuit of pleasure. This pursuit often transcends all boundaries, leading individuals to seek satisfaction at any cost. However, when the quest for pleasure turns reckless, it results in immense stress, strain, and moral deterioration. In failing to manage these pressures, many people fall prey to destructive habits such as alcoholism and drug addiction.
Alcohol is a depressant that provides temporary relief from tension, inhibition, anxiety, and guilt. Yet, alcoholism is a chronic, progressive, and potentially fatal disease. It is a primary disorder — not merely a symptom of emotional or psychological problems. Alcohol affects nearly every cell in the body, including those in the central nervous system. With prolonged use, the brain becomes dependent on it. The severity of alcoholism is influenced by genetic, psychological, cultural, and environmental factors.
Alcoholism is a major social problem and is often called a “family disease.” While it directly affects the drinker, its most profound impact is felt by the spouse and children, who suffer severe emotional and social consequences. It leads to family disintegration, domestic violence, and emotional trauma.
An alcoholic often becomes selfish, aggressive, and socially withdrawn — unable to fulfill the roles of a responsible spouse or parent. For many, the bottle becomes a substitute for companionship and love. Genuine affection and family harmony become impossible when one’s life revolves around alcohol. As a result, many families face constant conflict, humiliation, and in many cases, divorce or separation.
