Nearly fifty years ago, Kiriyanthan Jacob graduated with an engineering degree from the University of Michigan and returned to his homeland, India, in search of a bride. His journey led him to Thresiamma, a recent medical school graduate. Soon after their marriage, the couple made their new home in Northwest Ohio.
Over the decades, the Jacobs built meaningful lives — two successful careers, raised two children, and were blessed with twelve grandchildren. As the years passed, they began to reflect on how they could use their estate to benefit others. Their vision was twofold: to support community needs locally and to contribute to a cause close to their hearts in India. “Years ago, we visited an institution near my hometown that served individuals with mental illness,” recalled Dr. Jacob. “We decided to build a new rehabilitation center there, which was completed in 2009.” As a psychiatrist, Dr. Jacob understood the deep need: “Mental health issues are still very taboo in India. The center receives no government or church funding, so private donations are essential.”
When the couple shared their desire to continue supporting the center with their attorney, he recommended that each establish a Legacy Fund with the Toledo Community Foundation. A Legacy Fund is created during the donor’s lifetime but becomes active upon a “trigger event” — typically, the donor’s passing.
“Government restrictions make it challenging to donate directly to overseas charities,” Mr. Jacob noted. “The Foundation has the ability to thoroughly vet the recipients and ensure all government requirements are met.”
The Jacobs appreciate that their Legacy Funds will continue to make a difference long into the future — both in Northwest Ohio and in India. “Rather than making a one-time gift, an endowment through the Foundation ensures ongoing support for the charities we’ve chosen for years to come,” said Mr. Jacob. “Working with the Toledo Community Foundation made that vision a reality.”
